INTRAOCULAR LENSES (IOL)
In order to restore sight after removing cataract an intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is needed. Many options of material, design and functionality are to talk about with your surgeon previous the prodecure. In Cataract México we only implant great quality IOL’s made by renowned brands.
MONOFOCAL IOL
This is the most implanted IOL also called standard IOL. It provides only one distance vision, up close or far away (most common selected vision). It can correct hyperopia or myopia, but not astigmatism and presbyopia so glasses to correct them are not rare after surgery.
TORIC IOL
This are considered premium lenses and astigmatism can be reduced or eliminated when moderate-high astigmatism pre-exists; Far vision improves significantly, but not near vision as compared with multifocal IOL’s.
When a patient has pre-existing astigmatism and choose no to implant a toric lens, chances of needing glasses for correcting vision are very high.
MULTIFOCAL IOL
This is one of the most popular premium sight restoring IOL, it uses multiple focusing areas that provide vision at different distances (far, intermediate and near). Bifocals (far and near) are still implanted in the U.S. because FDA has not broadly approved Trifocals (far, intermediate and near) which have already proved to have better results in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Multifocal IOL correct presbyopia, myopia or/and hyperopia so maximum independence of glasses are obtained with multifocal IOL. Toric version of multifocal may be needed.
Ask your surgeon if you are a candidate for a multifocal IOL.
EXTENDED DEPTH OF FOCUS IOL (EDOF)
This represents a new technology that has recently emerged in the treatment of Presbyopia. In contrast to multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in treatment of presbyopia, EDOF lenses work by creating a single elongated focal point to enhance “range of vision” or “depth of focus”; these are recommended for a patient with more dynamic range of vision.
As this lenses reduces presbyopia effects by improving near vision, they also diminish the rates of halos and glare that multifocal IOL occasionally gives.
